Better time management skills will not only help you in your new internship, but with every aspect of your life. It’s no secret that you can be more productive when your time is managed appropriately. However, it’s not always the easiest task. Follow these easy tips on how to get better at managing your time.
Tip #1: Make a List of Your Tasks
You can’t manage your time if you don’t know what you should be spending your time on. The easiest way to start managing your time better is to understand what your main tasks are. Make a list of what your responsibilities are and keep it in an area where you see it all the time. If you have tasks that are to be done at certain times you can cross the tasks off your list. Every month I print out a new task list once I have completed all of my tasks. It helps you feel a sense of accomplishment to get all of your tasks completed.
Tip #2: Block Out Time
We’ve all been told that multitasking is the worst way to manage your time, but yet we still do it all the time. An easy way to get multiple tasks done in the most efficient way possible is to block out a certain amount of time to get one task done. If you can, block out time in your calendar so you can get your task done without being interrupted. It helps to eliminate distractions because you know that you only have a certain amount of time to get a task done.
Tip #3: Understand What Your Priorities Are
Sit down with your manager to understand what tasks should be prioritized. This will help you know what tasks to get done first. When you know what needs to get done first, you can plan the rest of your tasks around it and you can focus on what is most important. Another important reason to prioritize is that you won’t be overwhelmed with tasks that aren’t your main priority. If something unexpected comes up you will be able to look at your list and determine where it can fit in.
