I’ve always been a morning person since I was young. It must have been something about knowing most people were still sleeping when I woke up and feeling like I had broken some secret code to the universe on how to get more hours out of the day. Another insightful thought was that I was just plain hungry for some oatmeal and that’s what woke me up in the morning. Either way, how you start your morning really has an impact on how the rest of your day is going to be.
If you are constantly hitting snooze and rushing around, you are going to be groggy and much more stressed. If you wake up right when your alarm goes off, have a healthy breakfast and head out on time, you are going to feel much more relaxed and be more productive knowing you were able to accomplish things first thing in the morning.
Never been much of a morning person? No worries! If you want to become more productive in your morning, follow these tips on how I start my mornings and I promise you will notice a difference immediately.
1. Wake Up Early
This tip might sound daunting to some, but try it in small increments. If you normally leave yourself a half hour to get ready, leave yourself 40 minutes and wake up 10 minutes earlier than you usually do. One thing that really helped me with this was I told myself I didn’t have to get out of bed, I just had to wake up 10 minutes earlier. As soon as my alarm went off, I turned it off immediately and just surfed the web on my phone. Soon, I realized that I was much more awake and alert throughout the day just because I gave myself an extra 10 minutes to wake up each morning.
2. Make Tea & Breakfast
I love drinking tea in the morning and eating a big bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruit on top. It’s so nice to just relax before work and it gives me some time to myself. Making a healthy breakfast is a great way to start your day. Drinking tea or coffee in a mug rather than in a to-go cup makes for a calm morning and will set the tone for the rest of your day. Try to set things out the night before. Get your cup and tea or coffee ready to go so all you have to do is brew it and know what you are going to eat for breakfast. It makes your morning go by much smoother.
3. Read The News
I think it’s really important to know what is going on around me so I read the news every morning. I use an app called The Skimm. It makes reading the news actually really fun. The way the articles are written are really entertaining and it only gives you what you really need to know. I like it because it will explain something that is going on in a really easy to understand format. 4. Make Your Bed
I am one of those people who makes their bed everyday. It makes my room look so much more tidy and I feel like I have at least one thing accomplished. 5. Get Ready
As I’ve said in previous posts, I always have everything ready to go the night before. My clothes that I am going to be wearing are set out and my makeup is in an easy area to get to. Setting your clothes out the night before makes your morning so much less hectic because it’s one less decision you have to make.
6. Pick Up Any Stray Articles
After I’ve gotten ready, I make sure that I’ve put away anything that I’ve gotten out. My makeup bag goes back in my closet and I clean up my dresser. Make it your mission to clean up just one area before you leave. If you do that each day, you’ll find your home stays much neater. I like the sense of accomplishment I feel when I leave my house in the morning knowing that it’s clean.
7. Listen To A Podcast
I look forward to my commute in the morning because I listen to a few of my favorite podcasts. My favorites are The Mindful Kind and The Brendon Show. They are both really uplifting and it’s a great way to start the day. Both of these podcasts talk about how to live your best life. The Brendon Show is more towards productivity and more career focused, while The Mindful Kind is about using mindfulness techniques to live a happier life. Podcasts make you more engaged than just simply listening to the radio.
